Darwent Architecture were appointed to reimagine a challenging site surrounding the former outdoor swimming pool of the Rising Sun Hotel in Bamford, following a series of refused planning applications and appeals.
Working within with the constraints of the Peak District National Park, a new design was developed that addressed previous concerns around scale and detailing. The refined proposal was granted planning permission in July 2025, enabling this project to move forward.
The proposed scheme delivers a contemporary architectural response rooted in local character and materiality. The dwelling’s form and massing have been carefully developed to ensure there is no greater visual impact on the wider surroundings than the former changing room building.
The scheme aligns fully with PDNPA policy and design guidance, and achieves a sensitive scheme with a positive impact on its surroundings and the planners commended the high quality design.
