This project involves the conversion of a Grade II listed flour mill within the Over Haddon Conservation Area into a family home. Set on the banks of the River Lathkill, the proposal responds to the building’s critical condition by introducing a viable new use that will safeguard its historic character for future generations.
The conservation strategy was to celebrate the mill’s industrial heritage, preserving key machinery and spatial qualities. Any new interventions are deliberately contemporary in nature so that the historic built form and function is not confused for future visitors. The former milling room becomes an open-plan living space, while new interventions —such as walk-on glass floors—allow views of the historic mill wheels and mechanisms from multiple levels.
At basement level, access to the water wheel pit is opened up, enabling appreciation of its original function. Externally, materials will be repaired and restored, and the deteriorating sluice gate will be faithfully reconstructed using salvaged elements where possible.
