Set at the heart of Castleton, within the Peak District National Park and the village conservation area, Castleton Hall is a Grade II listed building with a rich history.
Listed in 1951, with the Coach House to the rear separately listed in 1984, the Hall has long been a prominent part of the village’s architectural fabric. From 1943 to 2012 it was owned by the Youth Hostels Association (YHA), during which time a series of alterations were made to adapt the building for its use. While functional, many of these changes eroded elements of the Hall’s historic character.
Darwent Architecture were appointed to guide a sensitive and carefully considered restoration. The project seeks to address works carried out by previous owners and to recover the architectural integrity of the building. At the same time, the proposals introduce thoughtful interventions that allow the Hall to function comfortably as a family home.
The result is an approach rooted in conservation, yet forward-looking — safeguarding Castleton Hall’s heritage while securing its next chapter.
