Corn Mill Flat Conversion

This challenging project completed in 2021 sort to convert an unused mezzanine floor within the engine room at Bamford Mill to an open market residential flat. The mill originally dates from 1782, but was destroyed in a fire in 1791. The mill was later rebuilt and converted into a cotton spinning mill water powered by the River Derwent. In the nineteenth century a beam engine was installed which was replaced in 1907 by a horizontal steam engine (Edna) which remains in place today. The conversion was an enjoyable experience where we worked with the client who was also the contractor, to mould accommodation around the existing engine gear and pulley workings, resulting in a harmonious conversion that preserved the heritage of the building whilst providing a contemporary industrial residential apartment.
