Darwent Architecture were approached to transform this property into a home that reflected the client's lifestyle and long-term needs.
The project involved the conversion of a traditional barn into a contemporary family home, alongside the conversion of existing garages to provide self-contained accommodation for extended family members. The design was futureproofed with provision for a lift and accessible living spaces, ensuring the home can adapt to changing needs over time.
The internal layout embraces open-plan living whilst preserving the character and scale of the original barn, creating bright and flexible spaces. Frameless glass balustrades to the mezzanine levels maintain uninterrupted views through the building, allowing the barn's impressive volume and exposed structure to remain intact.
A discreet rear extension, carefully sunken into the landscape and topped with a wildflower roof, accommodates the utility and plant rooms while minimising its visual impact. Large pocket sliding doors installed within the original barn openings blur the boundary between inside and out, creating seamless access to the surrounding landscape and framing expansive views.
The home also incorporates a range of sustainable technologies, including roof-mounted solar panels and an air source heat pump, helping to reduce energy consumption and support low-carbon living.
