280_Listed Chapel Conversion
This grade 11 former scout hut was originally built as a Presbyterian Chapel in the mid 18C. It had lain unused for a number of years before our client purchased at auction with the aim of converting to residential use. After a failed planning attempt, Darwent Architecture were appointed to create a more sensitive approach. One of the key heritage aspects the planners were keen to retain was the openness of the internal space which had remained mainly open throughout the building's history. We therefore designed a first floor layout that created bedroom pods and link circulation that avoided windows so as not to cut across the glass. This lead to an dynamic contemporary approach which breathes fresh new life into this otherwise unassuming building.
