Darwent Architecture were invited to tender and then selected as Conservation Architect for the Lighthouse Charity Shop on Spring Gardens, Buxton. The project formed part of the HSHAZ (High Street Heritage Action Zone) programme, delivered by Historic England, which aims to reinvigorate historic high streets and support local communities.
The design was developed with careful consideration of the building’s historic significance, the wider streetscape, and the preservation and enhancement of heritage assets within the Buxton Hardwick Conservation Area.
The redesigned shopfront positively contributes to the character and appearance of the street, aligning with relevant legislation and local planning policy. The completed scheme enhances the visual quality of the building, strengthens the vitality of Buxton town centre, and delivers tangible benefits for the local community.
Following completion, the shop reported a 33% increase in takings within the first three months, demonstrating the commercial and social value of well-considered heritage-led design.
